Heavy rain is part of life on Hawaiʻi Island. But when water isn't moving where it should, a normal rainy day can expose problems that have been developing on your property for months—or even years.

After a heavy rain, walk your property and look at where the water collects.

Low spots, improper slopes, compacted areas, blocked drainage paths, or simply having nowhere for runoff to go can all contribute to standing water.

Proper grading can play an important role in directing surface water away from areas you want to protect.

Where is it traveling?
